Effects of Non-periodized and Linear Periodized Combined Exercise Training on Insulin Resistance Indicators in Adults with Obesity: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract Background The aim was to verify the effect of non-periodized and linear periodized combined (aerobic plus resistance) exercise training on insulin resistance markers in adults with obesity. Methods A blinded randomized control trial conducted three groups individuals obesity (BMI, 30–39.9 kg/m 2 ): group (CG, n = 23), (NG, (PG, 23). NG PG performed aerobic exercises same session aerobic-resistance order for 16 weeks. Both intervention trained sessions weekly, a total duration 60 min each. had 30 always between 50% 59% reserve heart rate (HRres), while comprised 6 exercises, × 10–12 maximum repetitions (MRs). progressed from 40%–49% 60%–69% (HRres) 12–14 8–10 RM, respectively, along period. evaluated indicators included fasting glucose, insulin, homeostasis model assessment-estimated (HOMA-IR) collected pre- post-intervention. analyses were using generalized estimating equations. Results After weeks training, per protocol analysis ( 39) showed significant reductions HOMA-IR only (NG: Δ − 1.6, PG: 0.6; p 0.094).
